How to Breed Pokemon

The first thing you can do to get the most superior pokemon is to breed the best pokemon. So let me teach you how to breed pokemon to create the best. First thing’s first. Let me tell you about the importance of breeding pokemon to get good pokemon.

Pokemon IVs and Nature

Breeding is all about getting pokemon with the nature that suits it the most along with the best IVs or individual values. Now if you don’t already know, IVs are basically a pokemon’s genes. When you breed pokemon and get a pokemon egg, at least in more recent generations, 3 of the 6 stats are chosen randomly from either parent and passed down.

Let me explain why a pokemon’s IVs are so important. IVs determine the potential of a pokemon’s growth. What this means is that pokemon of the same species can have different stats when they both reach level 100. The one with the better IVs will have the better stats. Which is why it is important to breed pokemon with good IVs. With certain items we can determine the most likely outcome of the baby’s stats. Even the nature of the baby pokemon.

A pokemon’s nature can also have an effect on a pokemon’s stats. This can be important to a lot of hardcore pokemon trainers. Certain natures will increase one stat while decreasing another. Or they may not influence the stats at all. Just take a look at the table below to see how a pokemon’s nature can affect their stats. Note that the hardy, docile, bashful, quirky, and serious natures do not influence a pokemon’s stats as they are neutral.

Pokemon Items for Breeding

In order to help get the IVs you want in your pokemon we must use items. Certain items will help us guarantee which IVs will be passed down from the parents. And if we wish to pass down a specific nature, then the parent pokemon with the desired nature must hold an Everstone. Otherwise the female’s nature will be passed down (this applies to Pokemon Black and White and every generation after). Now let me explain a bit more about the items that can pass down IVs.

As I mentioned before, there are items that a pokemon can hold to pass down specific IVs. These are the Power items. Each one guarantees a specific IV trait will be passed down from the parent holding the item. Just take a look below.

Now there are more than just these that can help. A Destiny Knot is also a good way to pass down IVs. The Destiny Knot can be held by either parent. And 5 IVs are chosen at random from both parent pokemon to pass down. There are also Bottle Caps. Bottle Caps can max out 1 IV for any of your pokemon. So if your pokemon is nearly perfect except that 1 IV. You can use a Bottle Cap. This is referred to as Hyper Training. This is even more rare, but a Gold Bottle Cap can give you perfect IVs for all stats and not just one. Some other items you may want to consider when breeding are Mints (which can change a pokemon’s nature), Ability Capsules (can change a pokemon’s ability), Mirror Herbs (can transfer Egg Moves), and Ability Patches (can give Hidden Abilities).

How to Make Your Life Easier

I know this is a lot, and can require the upmost patience. And a lot of time. I mean a lot of time. But there are some things that can make your life easier. Find a Ditto. That’s step one. If you happen to find one with a lot of perfect IVs then that’s even better. Step 2, Hyper Train that Ditto until all the IVs are perfect using the Bottle Caps. Using the pokemon species that you actually want to breed, make sure it is female and has the nature and moves you want your pokemon to have. This is step 3. On to step 4. Breed. Make sure the female pokemon has the Everstone to pass on the nature you want and the Ditto is holding the Destiny Knot.

Step 5. Hatch them Eggs. To make this quicker, have the first pokemon in your party have the ability Flame Body, Magma Armor, or Steam Engine. This will reduce the steps needed to hatch your Eggs. Once your Eggs hatch, replace the female parent pokemon with one of your recently hatched pokemon. Preferably one that had the best IVs out of the bunch. And make sure they are holding the Everstone, unless you don’t care about the Nature. That was step 6. Now step 7 requires you to rinse and repeat from step 4.

Once you have the perfectly bred pokemon it’s time to train them to become the best! Click here to read on how to train pokemon.
