There are several different types of cat litter boxes available. And maybe you have tried one, or some of them. Let me tell you the pros and cons of each one so you know which one will be best for you and your cat.
Plastic Litter Boxes
There are many different kinds of plastic litter boxes. And what you want to make sure to look for are the ones that are BPA-free. These litter boxes are generally lightweight and last a good amount of time. The downside is that they do eventually need to be replaced, about once a year. But this all depends on several factors. Like if you own more than one cat or if they really like to dig in their litter box. If you see scratches or smell an odor that doesn’t go away, then it’s time to replace. And you’ll want to because of the bacteria buildup. Let’s learn more about the different kinds.
No Cover Boxes
The typical litter boxes you generally see. It is usually just a plastic tub with no cover. This kind is fine if your cat doesn’t kick its litter everywhere. Usually you will want to get the kind with a high enough walls in case they do. This litter box is ideal if your cat is uncomfortable with enclosed litter boxes. Some cats aren’t comfortable with being in covered litter boxes while going to do their business. They like to watch their surroundings just in case. So some might not use litter boxes with covers/lids. This is something you might want to consider when choosing a litter box.
Covered Boxes
Now there are two types of covered litter boxes here. Side entrance and top entrance litter boxes. Side entrance covered litter boxes are more common than those with a top entrance. These kinds of boxes are really good if your cat kicks sand everywhere. While the side entrance litter boxes are more common, top entrance litter boxes can help deter tracking more. The downside to top entrance litter boxes is that kittens may have trouble using it. Unless it also comes with a side entrance.
Stainless Steel Litter Boxes
Okay, these are their own category. Stainless Steel litter boxes are the way to go if you want a litter box that is easy to clean and that will last Years. These litter boxes do not come with covers or lids however. At least not that I have seen. And trust me I have looked. There are some however, that do come with plastic walls that you can put on to prevent sand from getting everywhere. This kind of litter box is the most sensible kind since you won’t have to replace it often and is easier to clean.
Disposable Litter Boxes
There are such things as disposable litter boxes. I haven’t used these litter boxes, but I would recommend against using them. They fall apart easily as they are made of cardboard. Now, some are biodegradable and some come with cat litter. And the fact that they are disposable makes cleaning up easy. At least when it comes time to replace them, litter and box and all. When it comes to cleaning out the poo and stuff, that might not be easy. Sometimes the litter with the urine will stick to the bottom or sides. This will make things difficult to clean.
Automatic Litter Boxes
I know it’s annoying to always having to clean out the litter box. But with automatic litter boxes, that’s no longer a huge issue. Right? Well sure… when you have Hundreds of dollars to spend. They are sooo expensive. It’s ridiculous. As much as I like the idea of not having to scoop out everything, it’s just too much money. Some of the best ones are over $300. But if you have the money, it might not be a bad choice. Depending on which one you get it will also be easy to clean. You do have to be aware that most, if not all, automatic litter boxes are covered. So if your cat doesn’t like being enclosed, forget it. You also need to make sure your cat isn’t scared of it when it moves or makes noise. If it’s too scared, then it’s just a waste of money. In addition, only clumping litter is to be used. And some of them cannot use pellets or tofu litter.
